EMMERICH MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL
Emmerich Manual High School is a Title I public high school with about 734 students offering grade levels from 9th Grade to 12th Grade. Student demographics can be found below. Its purpose is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education. With about 54 teachers, Emmerich Manual High School has a student/teacher ratio of about 13:1. The national average for public schools is about 15:1. A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
Emmerich Manual High School, located in the historic Bates-Hendricks neighborhood of Indianapolis, holds a significant place in the city's educational history. Founded in 1895 as a vocational and technical institution, the school was named after German-American educator Isaac F. Emmerich. For over a century, it served as a cornerstone of the community, known for its strong focus on trade skills and preparing students for the workforce. The campus itself is notable for its historic architecture, which has undergone various renovations and transitions to accommodate the changing needs of Indianapolis students throughout the decades.
In its more recent history, the school experienced a period of significant transformation as it became part of the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) innovation network. In 2021, the physical school building at 2405 Madison Ave officially closed its doors as a traditional high school following a broader district restructuring plan. While the "Manual" legacy remains a source of pride for its alumni network—often referred to as "Manualites"—the site and the school’s identity have since pivoted, reflecting the complex shifts in urban education, district management, and the evolution of neighborhood schools in Indianapolis.
