School Overview
Hoboken Charter School (HCS) is a tuition-free public charter school serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Founded in 1997, it holds the distinction of being one of the first charter schools established in New Jersey. The school is deeply committed to a "learning by doing" philosophy, utilizing a project-based curriculum that encourages students to connect their academic studies to real-world applications, community service, and personal exploration.
The school is structured into two main divisions: the Lower School (K–8), which emphasizes interdisciplinary projects and socio-emotional development, and the Upper School (9–12), which focuses on college preparation through a rigorous, inquiry-based lens. HCS prides itself on maintaining a close-knit, inclusive community where small class sizes allow teachers to provide individualized attention. By emphasizing critical thinking, social responsibility, and student agency, Hoboken Charter School aims to foster lifelong learners who are prepared to contribute positively to their local and global communities.
