ONSLOW EARLY COLLEGE
Onslow Early College is a public secondary school that is part of the Onslow County Schools school district, located in Jacksonville, NC with about 54 students. With about 3 teachers, Onslow Early College has a student/teacher ratio of about 18:1. The national average for public schools is about 15:1. A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
Onslow Early College (OEC), located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is an innovative educational partnership between Onslow County Schools and Coastal Carolina Community College. Designed as a “non-traditional” high school, the program allows students to complete their high school graduation requirements while simultaneously earning college credits. Many students have the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree or significant transferable college credit, providing a substantial head start on their post-secondary education and reducing future tuition costs.
The school is defined by its rigorous academic environment and small learning community, which fosters close relationships between students and faculty. By integrating high school coursework with college-level studies on a community college campus, OEC prepares students for the autonomy and expectations of higher education earlier than their peers in comprehensive high schools. The program is particularly well-suited for students who are looking for a challenging, supportive, and accelerated path toward their future career or university goals.
