YOUNGSTOWN EARLY COLLEGE
Youngstown Early College is a Title I public high school that is part of the Youngstown City school district, located in Youngstown, OH with about 243 students offering grade levels from 9th Grade to 12th Grade. A Title I school provides supplemental financial assistance to school districts for children from low-income families. Its purpose is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education. With about 13 teachers, Youngstown Early College has a student/teacher ratio of about 18:1. The national average for public schools is about 15:1. A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
Youngstown Early College (YEC), located on the campus of Youngstown State University in Fedor Hall, is a unique public school partnership between the Youngstown City School District and Youngstown State University. The institution is designed as an "early college" high school, which allows students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree or a significant amount of transferable college credit simultaneously, at no cost to the students or their families.
The school is specifically structured to provide a rigorous academic environment for students who might be traditionally underrepresented in higher education. By immersing students in a university setting early in their academic careers, YEC aims to bridge the gap between high school and college, fostering a culture of college readiness, personal responsibility, and academic ambition. Through this intensive curriculum, graduates are often well-prepared to enter the workforce or transition seamlessly into four-year degree programs with a significant head start.
