BARD HIGH SCHOOL EARLY COLLEGE

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Manhattan is a unique public school partnership between the New York City Department of Education and Bard College. Designed to bridge the gap between high school and higher education, the school offers a rigorous, tuition-free program that allows students to earn both a high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree from Bard College within four years. By condensing the traditional high school experience into the first two years and focusing on college-level liberal arts coursework for the final two, the school aims to provide an accelerated academic path for students who are ready for intellectual challenges earlier than usual.

The curriculum is built on a strong foundation of the liberal arts, emphasizing critical thinking, writing, and small-group seminar discussions. Rather than following a traditional high school trajectory, students engage with a faculty of scholars and professors who challenge them to analyze complex texts and develop independent research skills. Located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the school draws a diverse student body from across the city, fostering a collaborative and intellectually vibrant environment that prepares graduates not only for competitive four-year universities but for sophisticated academic engagement throughout their lives.
