School Overview
The Michigan Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA), located at the Fort Custer Training Center in Battle Creek, is a tuition-free residential program operated by the Michigan National Guard. Designed for 16-to-18-year-olds who have dropped out of school or are at risk of dropping out, the academy utilizes a quasi-military structure to instill discipline, responsibility, and academic focus. Over the course of a 22-week residential phase, cadets live on-site and participate in a rigorous curriculum that balances GED preparation, physical fitness, vocational training, and leadership development.
The program is built on "Eight Core Components" intended to foster holistic personal growth, including academic excellence, life-coping skills, and community service. Beyond the classroom, cadets engage in structured physical training and community volunteer work to build confidence and character. Following the residential portion, the academy continues to support graduates through a 12-month post-residential phase, during which mentors assist the students in transitioning into the workforce, higher education, or the military. By providing a highly structured environment, MYCA aims to help Michigan’s youth overcome barriers and successfully reintegrate into society as productive, self-sufficient adults.
