A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
The New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy (NOMMA) is a tuition-free public charter high school located on the Federal City campus in Algiers, New Orleans. Serving students in grades 9 through 12, the school is unique for its integration of a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (MCJROTC) program. While the school operates under a military structure—emphasizing discipline, leadership, and personal responsibility—it is not a recruitment center, and students are not under any obligation to join the armed forces after graduation.
The academy is designed to develop well-rounded citizens by balancing traditional academic subjects with maritime-focused electives and military training. Its location within the historic Naval Support Activity complex allows students access to facilities that support both their physical training and specialized maritime studies. By fostering an environment of structure, high expectations, and professional development, NOMMA aims to prepare its students for post-secondary success, whether they choose to pursue higher education, a career in the maritime industry, or service in the military.
