ELKHART MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
Elkhart Memorial High School is a Title I public high school that is part of the Elkhart Community Schools school district, located in Elkhart, IN with about 1,648 students offering grade levels from 9th Grade to 12th Grade. Student demographics can be found below. A Title I school provides supplemental financial assistance to school districts for children from low-income families. Its purpose is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education. With about 100 teachers, Elkhart Memorial High School has a student/teacher ratio of about 16:1. The national average for public schools is about 15:1. A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
Elkhart Memorial High School was a prominent public secondary school located in Elkhart, Indiana. Established in 1972, it served the community for nearly five decades, offering a comprehensive academic curriculum alongside a wide array of extracurricular activities, including strong athletic programs—most notably in soccer and basketball—and well-regarded performing arts departments. Throughout its history, the school was known for its "Crimson Chargers" mascot and played a significant role in the cultural and educational landscape of the Elkhart Community Schools district.
In 2020, Elkhart Memorial ceased operations as an independent high school following a major district-wide consolidation plan. The school merged with its long-time rival, Elkhart Central High School, to form the newly created Elkhart High School. While the California Road facility remains an active part of the district (now operating as the Elkhart High School Freshman Division), the closure marked the end of the "Memorial" identity, which remains a nostalgic point of pride for generations of alumni.
