High School In The Community

School Overview
High School in the Community (HSC) is a unique, small-environment magnet school within the New Haven Public Schools district. Founded in 1970, the school was built on a philosophy of democratic education, emphasizing student voice, social justice, and active community engagement. Unlike traditional high schools, HSC utilizes an inquiry-based learning model that encourages students to connect their academic studies to real-world issues, often through collaborative projects and seminar-style discussions that foster critical thinking and personal responsibility.

The school is defined by its strong culture of inclusivity and its focus on restorative practices, aiming to build a supportive community where both students and staff feel empowered. Because of its smaller size, HSC is able to provide a more personalized educational experience, allowing for stronger mentorship opportunities between teachers and students. By balancing rigorous academic standards with a commitment to civic involvement, High School in the Community prepares its students not just for college and career success, but to become thoughtful, engaged participants in their local and global communities.
