EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Early College High is a Title I public high school that is part of the Newport-Mesa Unified school district, located in Costa Mesa, CA with about 203 students offering grade levels from 9th Grade to 12th Grade. A Title I school provides supplemental financial assistance to school districts for children from low-income families. Its purpose is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education. With about 10 teachers, Early College High has a student/teacher ratio of about 20:1. The national average for public schools is about 15:1. A lower student/teacher ratio is a key factor that determines how much a teacher can devote his/her time to each individual student thus improving, or reducing (in the event of a higher student/teacher ratio) the attention each student is given for their educational needs.
Early College High School (ECHS), located in Costa Mesa and part of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, is a unique educational program designed to bridge the gap between high school and higher education. The school operates on a specialized model that allows students to complete their high school graduation requirements while simultaneously earning transferable college credits through a partnership with Orange Coast College. By integrating a rigorous academic environment with early exposure to collegiate expectations, ECHS aims to provide a more accelerated and focused pathway for students who are ready for the challenges of university-level work.
The campus culture at ECHS is defined by its smaller, supportive learning community, which fosters close relationships between students and faculty. This setting is particularly well-suited for students who seek a non-traditional high school experience and desire a head start on their post-secondary goals. Because the school emphasizes independent learning and time management, it serves as an ideal training ground for those planning to transition into four-year universities, offering them the chance to graduate with both a high school diploma and a significant head start on their college transcripts.
