Frenchboro Elementary School

Frenchboro Elementary School is a unique, one-room schoolhouse located on Long Island, an isolated island community about eight miles off the coast of Maine. As the sole educational institution on the island, the school serves a very small number of students, often spanning multiple grade levels. Due to its remote location and reliance on ferry service for access to the mainland, the school plays a central role in the community, serving not only as a place of learning but as a vital hub for the small, tight-knit population of year-round island residents.

The school is part of the "unorganized territory" school system in Maine, which provides education to students living in areas without their own municipal government. Because of its extremely small enrollment—sometimes fluctuating to just a handful of students—the curriculum is highly personalized, often utilizing project-based learning and multi-age instruction to meet individual needs. While students benefit from the personalized attention and the rich environment of island life, they also face the unique logistical challenges of being one of the most remote and smallest public schools in the United States.
